AFSCME California PEOPLE Endorses Connie Leyva for State Senate

April 17, 2014 – The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME California PEOPLE), one of our state’s largest and most diverse public sector unions, has endorsed Connie Leyva for Senate District 20, announced the Leyva campaign.

The AFSCME California PEOPLE represents nearly 180,000 members in more than 76 locals throughout the state.  They are probation officers, court employees, emergency dispatchers, home health workers, social workers, maintenance crews, water engineers, school and university support staff, and parks and recreation workers who provide the essential public services Californians rely on.

“Connie Leyva is a tried and trusted leader for working families,” said Willie L. Pelote Sr, AFSCME California PEOPLE’s Political Director.  “She’ll prioritize getting Californians back to work in jobs that pay well with a secure retirement and help build stronger communities and better schools.”

Connie Leyva has more than a decade of experience leading organizations to improve working conditions and wages for California’s working families by advocating for fair contracts that keep pace with the innovations businesses need to succeed.  She is running for State Senate to get California working again with quality schools, affordable colleges and universities, and investing in our infrastructure to help grow our economy.

Leyva currently serves as President of the 2.1 million member California State Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and as President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1428 - the local union she joined as a grocery worker while in high school.  Connie earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Redlands.  She lives in Chino with her husband Albert and daughters Allie and Jessie.
